What Kind of Medical Evidence Will Prove My Disability? |
|
The Social Security Administration requires evidence that you really do have a “disability,” before approving an application for Social Security Disability benefits.
Your “disability” may be either a physical or a mental condition, or both. However, the disabling condition must be a “medically determinable impairment.” In other words, you cannot get Social Security Disability benefits based only on your own statement that you have disabling medical problems.
Instead, the Social Security Administration requires "medically acceptable clinical and laboratory findings." These findings may come from the records and reports of your own treating doctors. In addition, the Social Security Administration may arrange for you to be tested or examined by its medical experts.
Many people with extremely serious disabling conditions have trouble navigating all these complex legal requirements.
In some cases, an individual has been unable to see a doctor on a regular basis. In others, a person saw several physicians, but none of them put together all the evidence to show that a combination of problems resulted in “disability.” Finally, some health conditions are difficult to diagnose, and may require further medical tests or examinations to convince the Social Security Administration that an individual meets the requirements for Social Security Disability benefits.
