Will Social Security Help a Disabled Person's Family?

Will Social Security Help a Disabled Person's Family?

The Social Security Administration may pay extra benefits to the family of a disabled worker who qualifies for Social Security Disability.

The fact that disabled workers can help their loved ones is another reason to apply for Social Security Disability benefits -- and to contact an experienced Michigan Social Security attorney for help convincing the Social Security Administration to approve Social Security Disability benefits.

The family members who may qualify for Social Security Disability benefits include:

Husband or Wife of the Person Getting Social Security Disability Benefits

The Social Security Administration will pay Social Security Disability benefits to a spouse who is:
  • Any age, if the spouse is caring for a disabled worker’s child, who is either under age 16 or who is disabled and receiving Social Security benefits.

Children of the Person Getting Social Security Disability Benefits

The Social Security Administration will pay Social Security Disability benefits to an unmarried child who is:
  • Under age 18, or
  • Age 18 or 19, who is full-time student (no higher than grade 12), or
  • Age 18 or older, who has a disability that started before age 22.
The Social Security Administration will pay benefits to the biological child, adopted child or stepchild of the disabled worker. A dependent grandchild may also qualify for these Social Security Disability benefits.

Surviving Spouse of a Deceased Person Who Qualified for Social Security Disability Benefits

The Social Security Administration will pay Social Security Disability benefits to the widow or widower of a deceased disabled worker, if the surviving spouse is:
  • Age 60 or older, and meets the Social Security Administration marriage length criteria, or
  • Age 50 to 59, if the surviving spouse became disabled before, or within 7 years after, the death of the person who qualified for Social Security Disability benefits.

How Much Can a Disabled Worker’s Family Get in Social Security Disability Benefits?

Each family member may be eligible for a monthly benefit of up to 50% of the disabled worker’s Social Security Disability benefit rate. However, the Social Security Administrations limits the total family benefits to between 150% and 180% of the amount of Social Security Disability benefits paid to the disabled worker.
